You're on your way! You might be interested to know that the Embroider Guild of America uses just that kind of fabric when teaching their Stitch of the Month. Do serge or hand stitch those edges right away while you still have some margin. Trust me, it will unravel and you'll be fighting threads. Also, keep some muslin hooped for a doodle (practice) cloth for experimenting with freeform (ie, no gridwork to guide you). Important thing is to have fun -- which you seem to be doing.

I think it's coming along well! It seems to be taking me longer than others, too. We're newer at it. No worries!
